CSJ EP032: SJ City Council and the Indictment of Mayor Ron G

			<itunes:author>CitizenSJ@gmail.com</itunes:author>

In this special and historical moment in San Jose History, we present a recording of the June 28th 'Special Meeting' of the San Jose City Council.

The purpose of this rare Special Meeting is to decide upon a course of action with respect to the recent indictment of current Mayor, Ron Gonzales. As always, the audio is being presented from a neutral point of view, and was recorded during the course of the City Council meeting.

A bit of background - A Santa Clara County grand jury recently indicted Mayor Ron Gonzales on 6 felony counts including bribery, conspiracy and misuse of public funds in connection with a supposely 'secret deal' with garbage waste hauler Norcal Waste Systems to cover future payments not detailed in the original contract. This led to the Mayor to seek additional funds in the amount of ~$11Million a few years later.Others that were indicted were both Norcal Waste Systems and Gonzales' aide, Joe Guerra. At the arraignment hearing on Monday (06/26/06), all three did not enter a plea, but indicated they would ask the court to dismiss the charges. The City Council is expected to ask the Mayor to resign, and if not, seek to explore ways to restrict his power as Mayor, including removal of his staff, reduction in salary, and removal of additional perks that the Mayor currently has.

As this is a long podcast, I have provided some markers:

00:00 - 42:50 Opening Statements and discussion
42:50 - ~1:10:00 Public Comments
1:10 - City Council DiscussionFinal Count:

I'll apologize right now for the sound issues with this particular segment. The moderator and host of the forum did not have a microphone, so they are barely audible. The candidates did have a microphone however, and there answers are clear enough where you can determine the original question.

Note: This is not an endoresement, but rather an additional channel to allow Citizen's to become familiar with the candidate. Similar recordings have been made for other candidates and all candidates have been offered to have their outreach meetings recorded. May 11, 6:00 pm: Cindy Chavez hosted an open, public 'Town Hall' at the West Valley library and this is a recording of that event. From Cindy's site: The central challenge for the next Mayor of San Jose is how to use all of our resources, assets and talented people to achieve the highest quality of life of any big city in the nation. Making San Jose the best place in America to live, work, play, and learn is my goal. That's why I hosted an Education Town Hall on Thursday May 11th at the West Valley Branch Library. This event was open to the public and provided an opportunity for us, as parents, teachers, community members and public officials, to discuss how we can work together to improve our schools and the education system in San Jose. It seems like the debates just keep coming. We are doing our best to try to record all of these meetings for you and have them put up as a Podcast for your listening enjoyment. Tonights (May 1, 2006) debate has the five candidates for the San Jose mayor debate in a forum moderated by NBC11's Lisa Kim. The candidates in this debate are: Cindy Chavez, Dave Cortese, Michael Mulcahy, David Pandori and Chuck Reed. After gettings started slightly late due to the HUGE immigration rally all around the downtown area, we listen as the candidates debate topics ranging from

Immigration rights

Recent decision to purchase liquor at gas stations

Norcal decision

City hall furniture costs

Public Trust

Getting young people involved

Airport financing plan

San Jose Background
San Jose became in 1850 the first incorporated city in the US State of California, and served as its first state capital. It is the most populous city in Northern California, the third in the state (after Los Angeles and San Diego), and has just moved up to the 10th largest in the US. The city of San Jose stretches up to Mount Hamilton (4,372 feet), and so comprises a number of natural parks that contrast with its urban and suburban areas. It is an important business center as the self-proclaimed "Capital of the Silicon Valley", with homes to many corporations such as eBay, Apple, Cisco, Intel, and many others.
