We heard about gdgt last year when Peter Rojas and Ryan Block announced it and have been looking forward to finding out exactly what it'll be. Now we know. It's a cross between social network, wikipedia and a database. You can create an account and associate yourself with gadgets you've owned and you currently own. You can rate those gadgets and you can edit specs if you see a mistake. You can follow me at user.gdgt.com/Cali and see an introductory video by Veronica Belmont here.

The Star Wars Force Trainer should be a big hit this Christmas season. It attaches to your head and when you start concentrating, it floats a ball.

bing is holding a photo contest. There will be a series of rounds, and on August 3rd, the winner will be seen on the homepage.

Instead of tying your kids to a leash, there's another option based on RFID. It's called the Kiddo Kidkeeper. The alarm will sound when your kid moves too far away.

Energizer has a Camera Battery USB Charging Clip that will charge your camera batteries via USB.

The promo code at Angie's List is GEEK. It will save you 25% on a membership.

Thanks to everyone who helped John P. and me organize the event, and to everyone who came! You can see a full write up on my blog, CaliLewis.me. Dave Curlee will be cleaning up the recordings and I'll post them right here on GeekBrief.TV. The best way to know when they're up is to follow me on Twitter, where I'll post the links.

PogoPlug is now Mac friendly. It makes external hard drives accessible on your local network and over the Internet. They're sending me one, so we'll have a review soon.

Two iPhone projectors are coming to market. Lancer's iJector appears to work with any iPod that does video including the iPhone and iPod touch. Resolution is 557X234 and projection size is up to 50 inches, and has stereo speakers. The second one is a joint effort from BeamBox and MiLi. The Evolution Mini Power Projector is 10 lumens, and resolution is 640X480.

X-mini Capsule Speakers are smaller than an egg when closed, but they have a patented expandable vacuum that they say mimics the resonance of a sub-woofer. It has a 3.2 inch screen, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, GPS, a compass, a gravity sensor, standard headphone jack and a dedicated search button.

We've known about the Mimo Minu USB Monitor for quite a while, but ThinkGeek.com started selling them and sold out almost immediately. Their price is $130 vs. $200 everywhere else.

PhotoFast is attempting to dissolve the disadvantage of Compact Flash cards with their CF adapters. One gives you an SD slot.
We've been talking about Augmented Reality for a couple years on GeekBrief.TV. It's exciting to see future tech begin to become reality. SPRXmobile has an A.R. browser called Layar. The excitement will reach the Dutch market first, and spread out from there.

The Samsung VC2400 is Telepresence even small companies can afford. It has a 24-inch LCD display and a 5-megapixel camera with a noise-canceling mic.

Everyone's talking about the Olympus PEN E-P1. It's a classic-looking Micro Four Thirds camera that will produce video and images with "depth of field and Art Filter effects familiar from still photography". Stills are 12.3-megapixels and HD video is captured at 1280X720.

If you're interested in getting the source code and instructions for multitouch on Linux, click here.

TomTom is introducing Homer Simpson as a new voice in their GPS units.
GBTV #580 (small) | Hillcrest Labs Loop Pointer Review

 <itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

The Loop Pointer was first announced at CES in 2007. We covered it on GeekBrief.TV and I was excited about it. It didn't come out and I forgot about it.

Monday, Hillcrest Labs finally released it an I ordered one from Amazon.com and I've been playing with it for about a day now and it rocks! On screen tracking was very precise. It doesn't require very much motion to move the cursor around the screen. The best part is the thumb scroll wheel. I wish every remote control had one.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work with Front Row since Front Row doesn't support mouse navigation. It works beautifully with Windows Media Center and it's even better with Elgato's EyeTV Hybrid. It took quite a bit of practice to learn to click hypertext links on a Web site. It took about an hour before I got my aim right.

The Loop is the most fun gadget I've played with this year and it works exactly like I hoped it would. It really makes me want to hook a Mac Mini up to my TV. It's also the best presentation controller I've ever used.

We're welcoming Angie's List as a GeekBrief.TV sponsor. If you follow me on Twitter.com/calilewis, you know yesterday morning I woke up to find my MacBook Pro infested with ants. Because Angie's List is a sponsor, I went to Angieslist.com to find an exterminator. It feels really good to pick service providers recommended by people in my community. I'll tell you how it goes on a future Brief. The promo code at Angie's List is GEEK, which BTW is the best promo code ever. It will save you 25% on a membership.

The Archos 9 will have a lot of the same functionality as the CrunchPad, but it'll have a 9" screen and will cost twice as much. It will run Windows 7 with an 80GB hard drive.

In 2010, there will be a Blu-ray standard, Manage Copy, that makes it legal for consumers to rip a single copy of a DVD. Is this a good thing? Movies like Marley & Me offer a good compromise between consumers and the movie business. It costs a little more, but it offers a Blu-ray disk, a standard def disk and a digital copy. Chime in with your thoughts in the comments below!

I talk a lot about Savant Systems, the home automation company that builds on Mac hardware and software, has a new product called the Virtual Home Controller. It's the most intuitive controller I've seen.

Twitter rescheduled maintenance downtime due to the Iranian situation.

Opera wants to make it possible to do things from your browser, like share files, serve a Web site, play your media from any browser, share photos, host a chat room and create a virtual wall for notes.

Yesterday, we welcomed Brookstone (promo code SHOWGEEK) as a new sponsor.
A guy decided to make a 130 megapixel camera out of a 1200 dpi Epson GT-S620 scanner. You can see his experiments on his Flickr Stream.

I've decided I won't be upgrading to the iPhone 3GS due to the upgrade pricing structure. Early upgrade pricing makes the 16GB version $400 and the 32GB version $500, and if you don't qualify for that, the full price is $600 for the 16GB and $700 for the 32GB.

The Nokia N97 is being sold now and it comes preloaded with Qik.

If you love the smell of books and libraries, take a look at Smell of Books in a Can. I don't think it's real, but they're showing a can of Crunchy Bacon Scent. How could I resist?

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 with Wii MotionPlus is now shipping.
Microsoft has finally announced the Zune HD, meant to compete head to head with the iPod Touch. It'll have an OLED screen, and Internet Explorer browser, and will be using flash memory.

The American Idol vote was allegedly influenced by AT&T. We're hearing they provided Kris Allen fans with phones with free text-messaging services and lessons on how to submit 10 text messages at once.

Engadget put all the mobile broadband companies to a head-to-head speed test. AT&T won for speed, but is most expensive when it comes to overage charges. Take a look at the results from Engadget - it's pretty interesting!

Apple announced new specs for the 13" white MacBook. The processor is faster at 2.13GHz. It has faster RAM, but is still 2GB, and the hard drive is bigger at 160GB.

DSLR Remote is an app that allows you to control your Canon EOS DSLR with iPhone/iPod Touch. If your camera supports Live View, you'll be able to see the live stream on your iPhone screen. It'll be $20, but for a limited time after it's approved, will be selling for just $10.

You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3.
I'm excited about the possibility of an app called Glympse . It allows you to share your real-time location with a selected person for a limited time. It's perfect for when you're part of a group attending a concert, or fair, or any large event where you might need to locate other people in your group. So far, it's only for Android phones, but will be available for iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Palm.

We've all been waiting for the Pre. The official release date is June 6th in the US, and the price will be $199.99 after a rebate and contract. How many of you are going to be getting a Pre, and what phone will you give up to get the Pre? Leave a comment below!

The BD390 Blu-Ray Player with WiFi and DivX is very interesting to me. It will upscale standard DVDs to 1080p, gives you the option of watching DVDs in 24fps or 60fps, and has WiFi for streaming online content from CinemaNow, Netflix and YouTube.

Sharp is working on a Solar Hybrid Mobile Phone to give you a minute of talking time for every 10 minutes in the sun. The goal of WolframAlpha is to provide you with answers to your search queries rather than results that will provide you answers.

Acer announced two new netbooks, the A0751h and AOD250 with full size keyboard, between four and eight hours of battery life, and multi-touch gesture ability.

Toshiba's Portege R600-ST4203 has a 512GB solid state drive, 3GB of RAM, and Wireless N, but it's priced at $3500.

The Casio EX-FS10 is a point and shoot camera that captures video at 1,000 frames per second, and shoots 9 megapixel stills. It costs $300.
Today's Brief is all about the gadgets I have lying around the GBTV Studios. I've always loved the products from Thoughtout.biz. The latest is the Ped3 Auto. It has suction cups so you can mount it to the windshield or your dashboard to use apps like Google Maps easily.

eWoo made some interesting design choices with the eFizz HiFi Station. Overall it's a beautiful design with a down firing subwoofer.

I can't give you a review of the TriaBeauty Laser Hair Removal System just yet, but I will over the next six to eight months.

I used the ProPrompter Wing for iPhone and iPod Touch while I was in Australia. It's the least expensive prompter option you can get.

You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3. However, AT&T has disabled using it over 3G, so you'll only be able to access TV via WiFi.

We've been thinking about IMAX since the new Star Trek movie was released. Mark Wilson from Gizmodo went into some detail about IMAX projection.
I'm back from Australia! I missed pretty much everything that happened in tech for the last two weeks, but the one thing I did hear about during the craziness was the Kindle DX. Its larger size makes it ideal for textbooks, newspapers and professional documents, and it comes with PDF support.

If you're not familiar with the higher end speaker market, I've got a couple for you to take a look at today. The CAT MBX Speakers cost $560,000 per pair. Or, for about half the price, check out the Magico Ultimate speakers. HigherFi.com has even more to browse through. The CS3 Speakers go on my Gadget Lust List for their design, but I certainly won't be buying them at $3,000.

PermaFLOW is a clear sink trap designed to let you see what's happening down your drain. It includes a knob that will sweep out things that get stuck.

When you're thinking about gadgetizing your house, you can't skip over a robotic lawn mower. The Automower 260 ACX from Husqvarna will automatically mow your lawn and charge itself, has an anti-theft alarm, and it'll send you an SMS if something goes wrong with it. http://www.automower.com/ I might be helping judge the Boxee API developer contest. They'll be giving away a Drobo and a 46-inch Sony Bravia XBR9 in each of the three categories - Video, Music and Photos. You can find more information about the contest at developer.boxee.tv.

You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3.
The Livio Radio takes a design cue from my favorite radio, the Model One, but it's meant to stream Pandora music. There are Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons on the radio and the remote to ensure you're taking full advantage of the Pandora service.

DSLR users who want to up their game but aren't ready for pro gear might be interested in the Nikon D5000. It shoots 720p video at 24 frames per second and 12.3 megapixel stills. They included a swiveling view screen that helps you see what you're shooting from the angle you want. It'll be available by the end of April.

Bella's Wireless HD Mouse is meant to improve the experience of editing video. You can assign specific movements (think gesture control) so you have a jog wheel, and with a single click, you can move right back into normal mouse behavior for non-editing applications.

If you've been following the Brief for a while, you know I use Bodelin Technology's ProPrompter. They just announced software for the iPhone and iPod Touch plus a ProPrompter Wing to make using a prompter super portable and easy, for both professionals and casual use. When the app is approved, I'll follow up on the show.

You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3. Greg Grunberg is more than a twittering Heroes celebrity, but through Twitter, he was able to make an idea come to life. His idea was Yowza!. It's an iPhone and iPod Touch app that uses your location to find deals near you. If you're out shopping, you can find out what stores are offering deals near you, in either a 5, 10 or 15 mile radius. The app also lets you search by city to enable you to plan ahead and still save money. Greg explains how small or large businesses can offer potential new customers a reason to stop by, and why customers will want it on their iPhone. It's free for customers, and can be found at GetYowza.com.

I've been asking Data Robotics for a Pro version of Drobo since they released their original Drobo product. I wasn't the only one. Small businesses, editors and photographers have been asking, and today the Drobo Pro is released. It's rackmountable, has Gigabit Ethernet, and holds 8 SATA drives of any type or size. You can find out more at drobo.com/drobopro.

The Media Mover is a USB gadget for your DVR that transcodes video on the go, so you can carry the show you're watching with you as you move around the house.

Real Networks was sued and ordered to stop selling RealDVD, which allows you to store digital copies of the DVDs you own on up to 5 PCs. They're going into court April 24th to fight for your rights. You can follow their story at realdvd.com/litigation.

Brando announced a new SATA Hard Drive Desk Top Dock. It looks to be VoIP friendly and is $60.

I've made the Top 16 for The Best Job in the World. That means I'll be flying to Australia for a week of interviews in May, and the final winner will be announced May 6th. We'll be shooting some episodes of GeekBrief.TV from Australia while we're there! I'm blogging about the contest and my experiences during the process on my blog, CaliLewis.me

You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3.
GBTV #539 (small) | iMovie Update, Twitter Update, PS2 Price Drop, Peekaru, ThumbSaver, DMC-GH1

 <itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

Apple released an update to iLife '09. Most notable in the update is the ability to export 720p video in iMovie, among some other changes.

I've been waiting for a change Twitter just made, and I wasn't completely sure they were going to give it to us. If you use a Twitter desktop application, like TweetDeck, you're probably like me in that you get frustrated when you go to the Twitter website. In the past on the website itself, you could only see @replies that started with @calilewis (as an example), but now you'll be able to see any tweet that includes your @username in the message, beginning, middle or end.

Sony didn't drop the price of the PS3, like I speculated yesterday, but the PS2 is now under $100.

The Peekaru

If you're looking for a good Father's Day gift, take a look at The Thumbsaver. It's designed to help you avoid banging your thumb. Panasonic will be releasing the DMC-GH1 in Japan soon. It shoots in 1080p video, like my beloved Canon 5D Mark II.

You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3. It will allow you to make Skype to Skype calls, Skype to regular phone number calls, and can be used with a second gen iPod Touch. It won't be available for Blackberry users until May.

Sling Media submitted SlingPlayer Mobile to Apple for approval. <itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

This is the first part of a conversation I had with Greg Grunberg who plays Matt "The Mind Reader" Parkman on the TV show Heroes about Twitter.

Twitter can be called a lot of things, but one of the things it is is a great facilitator. It facilitates connections that make real differences in people's lives. Greg Grunberg (@greggrunberg) started using Twitter. My friend Rick "MacMerc" Yeager (@rickmacmerc) likes Heroes and when he noticed that Greg was using Twitter, he offered Greg some tough love to to help him get the most out of his Twittering. Greg and Rick became friends and now they're business partners. They'll be launching an iPhone App soon called Yowza!!

My friends Dave (@davecurlee) and Kat Curlee (@katcurlee) recently found out their daughter has epilepsy. Kat shared the news on Twitter. Greg Grunberg has a son with Epilepsy and he serves as the Chair for the National Walk for Epilepsy. He reached out to Kat with encouragement and advice and really helped to alleviate tons of anxiety Dave and Kat were feeling.

Greg, Rick, Dave and Kat all connected on Twitter and it didn't matter that one of them was a famous TV guy. Twitter just put them on equal footing as nice people who could help each other.

The National Walk for Epilepsy will be held in Washington, DC on the National Mall, Saturday, March 28, 2009. Greg is walking for his son's team, Jake's Crazy Brain Waves. You can find out more information at walkforepilepsy.org.

Cali's Twitter Page

Apple's announcement was Tuesday. iPhone 3.0 won't come out until this summer, but it'll bring some much desired features, including cut and paste!

Last week, I tweeted about the Dell Adamo, and now it's been launched. At first, we thought it would a MacBook Pro competitor, but it's actually more comparable to the Air. It'll sell for $2000.

If you were in the Geek Brief family last year, you saw my breaking story about Woopra, a live web analytics program. I've never experienced an app or site that has taught me so much about my website. They released version 1.3, although in my opinion it should be 2.0, because there are so many new features. It's not being pushed out to everyone yet, but if you'd like to give it an advanced look, you can download Woopra 1.3 here.

Android Live Folders will be a new feature that delivers live updates to Android phones.

I'm on my way to Los Angeles. Here are the details on the meetup. For more details about my LA trip, click here.

Sunday, March 22nd, Tourism Queensland will be holding an event and GIVING AWAY two tickets every hour to Australia!!! It's being held on the lawns of the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, so it's the perfect place for us to hang out and get to know each other!

Date: Sunday, March 22nd Time: 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM Location: Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach, California - on the lawns

There is no registration or RSVP required, but I would love to know who's thinking about coming, so leave a comment below or send me a email! I'm looking forward to meeting you LA folks!

Follow my Twitter account for any updates on the day - I'll post exactly where I am when I get there.

Vote for Cali

We've all had the desire to have the fastest computer in the world, but this guy did something about it! He put 24 Samsung Solid State Hard Drives in a PC and in this promotional video demonstrates just how fast it is in today's video. It doesn't matter how fast your computer is, you know what you ultimately want is instant response. You click an icon and the app is instantly up and running for you. This is the closest thing I've ever seen to that.

You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3. It's free, and will keep your place using Whispersync. Set down your Kindle, leave the house, and continue reading on your iPhone or iPod Touch. I tried it and I love it.

WePC.com is ASUS/Intel project where you can share your ideas for a dream computer with engineers who can bring the best of those ideas to life. The first product to come out of the project is a dual screen notebook on display at CeBit 2009.

ASUS also announced their "Shell" 1008HA thin, light Luxury netbook at CeBit.

ASUS also kind of, but just barely announced the EeeNAS PC. It's network-attached storage mated to a PC and it has a built in touch screen on the front that can be used to control it.

ASUS ALSO announced (and this one I want) the ASUS Eee PC Keybaord. It's a keyboard that has a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom -powered nettop built in. It kind of looks like an Apple keyboard but on the side is a 5-inch touch screen. The keyboard connects to a display via HDMI. There is also a wireless version that uses wireless HDMI.

You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3. They've updated iMacs, the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro. Very little has changed on the outside of any of the machines. It's all about faster, better more effecient performance. The Mac Pro internal system architecture has been re-designed to make upgrades even easier.

Out of everything that's changed, I'm most excited about the new Airport Extreme. It now simultaneously and separately supports 2.4GHz data Wi-Fi AND 5GHz Wi-Fi. That means your need for speed on your computer isn't throttled by all the 2.4GHz wireless devices you have in your house. The new Extreme also supports up to 50 users and guests can be on a different network to keep data on your network secure.

On today's Brief, I talked about being short-listed for the Best Job in the World contest. Winning would mean Neal and I would move to an Island in the Great Barrier Reef from July to December 2009. The whole thing is a marketing campaign by Tourism Queensland so my duty would be to share my experience on the island through video, blog posts and tweets. I would, of course, continue to do Geek Brief from the Island. The way it would work is pretty simple. Neal would be with me and he would work full time on the show. I already spend 80 percent of my time interacting with you guys through Twitter, blog posts and email. That's what Tourism Queensland is looking for in this promotion, so my life wouldn't be that much different for those six months than it is now. The difference would be a change of scenery, and I would be producing a ton of travel and nature content in addition to releasing 4 episodes of Geek Brief a week with the beauty of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef in the background.

Tourism Queensland will pick 10 people. There is an online vote to pick an 11th. All 11 will travel to Australia for an interview. They'll pick from the 11. I appreciate your votes for me at IslandReefJob.com/cali. You can vote once a day for the next 30 days. If you have any questions about it, I'll answer in the comments on this post. Click here to Vote! (you can vote once a day!) In the UK, Glen Kerley found a mobile in the belly of a fish and in Wisconson, Emma Schweiger found a Nokia phone in a freshly opened bag of Clancy's Ripple Potato Chips.

DEMO 09 is happening in Palm Desert, CA and also live on the Internet starting at 8:30 AM PST on March 2 and March 3.

The Touch Book from Always Innovating will debut at DEMO 09. It's a netbook AND tablet computer with a touch screen for under $300. The specs have a lot of people interested in seeing if it will really deliver.

Rafe Needleman got a preview of Avaak's Vue, a wireless Web cam system designed for home monitoring.
GBTV #520 (small) | Apple TV Update Breaks Boxee, Safari 4

 <itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

The latest Apple TV update (2.3.1) breaks Boxee again. Sales of the Apple TV surged in the last quarter of 2008, and my guess is that Boxee was a factor. Boxee is a killer app for Apple TV and I would love to see Apple open up the platform. If you already have Boxee installed, you can update Apple TV and just use the patchstick to re-install. It's inconvienient, but not the end of the world. My "Leave Boxee Alone" segment is a parody of Chris Crocker's "Leave Britney Alone" YouTube video. It's a good idea to watch it if you don't get the joke. Safari 4 was released yesterday and it has 150 new features, some of which are almost as innovative as tabs. It's in beta, and worth a download, but like any beta download you should proceed at your own risk. Alex Lindsay is reporting system wide crashes due to Safari 4. Cnet UK did some benchmarking and found that it renders JavaScript 42 times faster than IE7.

We have video from Geekologie.com of what might be the new Mac Mini. If it's real, it's unfortunate that neither of the two display ports are HDMI. You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3.
GBTV #519 (small) | Kindle 2

 <itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

There is a reason Kindle 1 is a success. It did what it was supposed to do without frustrating users. Kindle software and services are so good that the industrial design flaws in version 1 were easy to overlook ... at least for early adopters. Kindle 2 is ready for everyone. It combines great software, great service and a very nice little piece of hardware.

Kindle 2 feels better to hold. It's softer and there are plenty of possible ways to hold it without accidentally turning pages. With Kindle 1, when you wanted to awaken it from sleep, you had to press two buttons with two fingers or two thumbs. That's been replaced by a simple slide of the power switch. Slide it again and Kindle will go back to rest.

Kindle 1 was extremely readable and I had no complaints about the contrast, but Kindle 2 is just better. Letters and images are crisper and they pop a little more.

It took me about 20 seconds to adjust to the 5-way joy stick. The shiny, silver bar on Kindle 1 was extremely cool, but like I said early on, it seems like that bar was just something they did because they could. It wasn't necessary and loosing it makes Kindle 2 a little more elegant.

I've had about 2 hours with Kindle, since I unboxed it on video. To me, it feels like the UI is sleeker. It feels like I can accomplish tasks in one or two clicks when it used to take several. A good example is if you want to delete a book. With Kindle 1, I would go into menu and then choose content manager, click a box beside a title and then click an option to delete it. With Kindle 2, all I have to do is slide the joystick to the left and I immediate get the option to "remove from device."

Text to speech is good enough that I'll use it, but not good enough to keep me from thinking it could be better. I know the guy who is the voice of Kindle. You can find Tom Glynn at myspace.com/tomglynn.

Kindle has a section called Experimental. At first we had Basic Web browsing, Play MP3 and Ask Kindle Now Now. Ask Kindle Now Now is what was replaced by Text-to-Speech. I gave Basic Web a try to see if there was anything different. It looks basically the same, but somewhere along in the life of Kindle Amazon enabled something that wasn't originally possible when Kindle 1 dropped. You can Tweet and send and receive Gmail from the Kindle now. Dave Peterson from GadgetyTech.com confirmed that he was able to tweet from his Kindle 1 a little while back so it may not be new, but it was news to me.

Initial looks at any device rarely hold up over time. Using Kindle 2 over time, I'll find things about it that I love more than I thought I would and things about it that I don't like so much. With Kindle 2, Amazon.com sanded off the rough spots and released just what I wanted the first time.

You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3.
Hulu is being taken off Boxee's available content. No one is happy about the decision, but Jason Kilar's approach to the situation is commendable. I get the impression that he realizes having to do this is as boneheaded as we all think it is. A year ago, I hosted a panel on 4G. Back then, no one was really talking about it except for a select few, but now we're beginning to see some action. Verizon Wireless chose Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent as network vendors for deployment of 4G in the US. This is going to be exciting as it begins to roll out in 2010!

The Bushnell HD Torch Flashlight throws away the circle in a circle projection that we're used to in a flashlight, and adopts a square beam of light that I'm very intrigued by.

Samsung's Omnia HD is getting a lot of buzz at Mobile World Congress. It has an AMOLED display and shoots 720p video. More details in the video.

We'll be reading the contest entries for the Bag O' Schwag live on Ustream. Join us Friday after Dollhouse. Follow me on Twitter for the links and times. Saturday we'll be at the AMC Best Picture screening. @justdevin won a contest on Twitter so he gets to come with us for free. We've talked about Savant a few times on GeekBrief.TV and did an interview on Geek Brief Radio, but Macworld was my first chance to see the gorgeous onscreen interface in person. Because the Savant system is built on top of OSX and uses Mac hardware, they take advantage of core animation and the result is a navigation system that looks really, really nice.

The newest feature I'm excited about is called Read-to-me. It's text to speech so you can listen to your books when you can't read them. I've pre-ordered mine and will have an unboxing and my initial thoughts as soon as it arrives!

With the transition to Digital TV, anyone like schools, churches, community organizations who use devices like wireless mics that operate in frequencies between 698 and 806 MHz face a potential issue. The frequencies will be sold, and when that happens, it'll be illegal to operate these devices. To understand the rules in more detail, please visit geekbrief.tv/wirelessmic.

Nikon announced a new lens to improve low light performance. It's called the AF-S DX 35mm f1.8 G lens.

Pioneer will be leaving the world of plasma displays and will be spinning off their DVD division to Sharp.

During the Grammy's, Microsoft aired a great commercial!

You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3.

This morning started like a typical morning for me ... with a google search. I searched for Bruce Williams, a broadcaster who does a business advice show and got the results I'd respect along with warnings on every search result. The warning says, "This Site May Harm Your Computer." I went to a different Mac and did a search. Same thing. I used different search words and phrases. Same thing. I did a search from different browsers and from a PC and got the same warning message.

Next step twitter. I asked if anyone else is getting the error and it appears to be happening to everyone on every search.

I decided to go live on ustream as we tried and figure out what wass happening.

Then we heard from Google. They explained that it was human error:

What happened? Very simply, human error. Google flags search results with the message "This site may harm your computer" if the site is known to install malicious software in the background or otherwise surreptitiously. We do this to protect our users against visiting sites that could harm their computers. We work with a non-profit called StopBadware.org to get our list of URLs. StopBadware carefully researches each consumer complaint to decide fairly whether that URL belongs on the list. Since each case needs to be individually researched, this list is maintained by humans, not algorithms.

We periodically receive updates to that list and received one such update to release on the site this morning. Unfortunately (and here's the human error), the URL of '/' was mistakenly checked in as a value to the file and '/' expands to all URLs. Fortunately, our on-call site reliability team found the problem quickly and reverted the file. Since we push these updates in a staggered and rolling fashion, the errors began appearing between 6:27 a.m. and 6:40 a.m. and began disappearing between 7:10 and 7:25 a.m., so the duration of the problem for any particular user was approximately 40 minutes.

So far, smart phones launched in answer to the iPhone have disappointed. The Palm Pre looks like it's combination of hardware and software is elegant enough in functionality to provide consumers with a real choice. Tim Cook, COO at Apple even offered a warning to competitors after the Pre was announced:

We approach this business as a software platform business. We are watching the landscape. We like competition as long as they don’t rip off our IP. And if they do, we will go after anyone who does.

Friend of the Brief, SERKOART, took his 5D Mark II to the Palm booth at CES and captured video of the Pre in action. He posted the first part on mobiledivide.com and he'll post part two of the video Wednesday.

Both the iPhone and Palm Pre benefit from a closed development environment. On the open-source front, Android developer, Luke Hutchison introduce a hack enabling multi-touch on T-Mobile's G1.
GBTV #500 (small) | A Celebration in Steel

 <itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

John P. is back on the Brief. This guy is fascinating to us because he retired at a young age with enough money to do whatever he wants. He choose to spend time learning to do interesting things like forging knives out of steel, welding and the list goes on and on. He learned to use and bought a plasma torch. This thing cuts through steel like a hot knife through ice cream. We're not that gung ho about celebrating round numbers, but 500 seemed round enough to merit something special. It's kind of compounded by the fact that Neal and I celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary on Sunday, January 25th.

I asked John if he would demo his plasma torch by cutting the GeekBrief.TV logo from a piece of steel. He did and it's wicked cool!

Thank you guys for sticking around for 500 shows. Our goal is to keep the show cheesy, but constantly make it look better and better. By the grace of God and friendship of those of you who watch, it's 500 down and a few thousand more to go!

I like most companies I get to interact with in the course of producing Geek Brief, but I LOVE small family-run businesses that have leveraged the power of the Internet to have an international reach. SmugMug is a great example. It was founded by Don MacAskill and he later hired Dad and brothers to help. It keeps growing and growing and best of all they're a profitable company in Silicon Valley.

I talked with Don about starting SmugMug and the resent relationship between them and Vincent Laforet. Vincent and his team are using a Canon 5D Mark II, a RED camera and a Panasonic HVX200 (the camera we use) to document one of the world’s top surfers, Jamie O’Brien. He's also sharing some behind-the-scenes explanations about the equipment he's using. SmugMug gave me permission to embed the videos on GeekBrief.TV (links below) and there you'll find links to the full 1080p videos hosted at SmugMug.com.

Part 1: "Taking Off!"
Part 2: "Behind the Scenes 1"
Part 3: "Waiting for the Swell"
Part 4: "Backdoor Switchfoot"
Part 5: "Behind the Scenes II"
Part 6: "Fish Eye View"
You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3.
Layered Tech is one of the top enterprise-level Web hosting companies in the world.

Most viewers of Geek Brief are probably familiar with consumer level, shared hosting where you order hosting and it's ready for you almost right away. It's not quite so simple for large businesses and Web 2.0 companies. Ordering a dedicated server to host a Web site from a secure data center that provides redundancy and many layers of physical security has traditionally taken about 3 days from the time you order until the server is up and running. Because of the security involved and the complexity of the setup, the process has involved using a team of really smart and talented IT professionals to manually configure the hardware. Layered Tech had an idea to automate the menial tasks so they could put their team to work inventing new and better solutions for hosting.

The automated process will configure a server or lots of them to fit the needs of enterprise level clients within about 20 minutes.

Layered Tech gave me a sneak peak at how the system works, and today I can share it with you. If you want to see what it's like to pick out a server live, here's a link. If you click Configure on any of the servers, you'll be able to see the quantity available in the data center.
