<itunes:summary>Drobo released an SDK today. Developers can build apps to make Drobo
do more after joining the Drobo Developer Community [1].

Fontstruct [2] is a free, Web-based app for future typography rock
stars. I want the creator of the next Helvetica to be a GeekBrief.TV
viewer.

GoLive2 [3] is releasing a Wiimote inspired series of controllers for
PC gaming and they're calling them Stix.

Philippe Starck designed a small wind turbine [4] that might
generate 20% to 60% of the energy needed to power a home. I skeptical,
but definitely interested.

149 Series Mitsubishi HDTVs [5] will include 16-point speaker systems
that simulate 5.1 surround sound.

<itunes:summary>After trying multiple iPhone cases, I finally found one that I'm happy
with. It's called the Naked Case [1].

The Dock Extender [2] from SendStation is a universal dock
extension kit that lets you plug your iPhone in a dock without
removing the case.

RuinediPhone.com [3] has a petition [4] to try and get Apple to
intervene for Canadians and make Rogers offer a more acceptable rate
plan.

The PlantSense GardenGro [5] offers a more high tech approach to
growing plants.

Neal is finally starting to use Firefox 3 as his main browser,
thanks to extensions like Gspace [6]. Gspace makes it easy to use
Gmail for storage. You can download the extension here [7].

<itunes:summary>Producing a technically good streaming show isn't something we need to
do for any reason beyond the difficulty of making it work without
spending thousands of dollars on equipment. The challenge has driven
us to distraction. We've spent days researching options and talking to
developers. We've spent nights dreaming about possible solutions.
Streaming doesn't scale like podcasting, but it's a lot of fun to go
live whether it's on QIK [1] or On Location [2] or in the studio.

Leo Laporte [3] is doing the best job of anyone. He's got the talent
to keep viewers interested for a long period of time and/or keep
checking in throughout the day. He also has the foresight to invest in
equipment to make his stream look better than any other live show I've

TWiT is a leader because of talent plus Leo's commitment to making it
sound great. TWiT Live will be a leader in streaming for the same

Leo is using a $10,000 TriCaster [4] for switching and lower

We've researched alternatives and there aren't that many. Sony has
it's AnyCast [5], but it's about $20,000. The Datavideo SE-800 [6]
sells for about $5000, but it doesn't really fit the mission.

We started looking into software solutions too. Mike Versteeg's
VidBlaster [7] is awesome. He's now working to make it work with
streaming services like Ustream.TV [8], but it's going to take some
time. Wirecast [9] would be a great solution too, if it worked with
the streaming services. Ustream tells me it will by August.

Tonight we're testing CamTwist Studio [10] on CaliLive.TV [11] at
8PM CDT.

It's almost like this quest has become a massive mountain we have
to conquer before we can move on and get back to normal. We want to
get to the point where we can produce a live streaming show that looks
as good as TV. This Brief is about our streaming quest, but I hope it

emerging demand for an even less expensive solution than Tricaster.
Tricaster is awesome and the price is low for what it accomplishes,
but churches, community groups and people like me are looking for
something that isn't being sold yet. Hopefully someone who watches
Geek Brief [12] will take on the challenge and meet the need.

I opened up a topic on GBTVTalk.com [13] to discuss the need

<itunes:summary>Amazon lowered the price of the Kindle by $40 [1]. I get asked on a
regular basis if I would recommend it. Yes! It has hardware design
flaws, but the reading experience is addictive.

The TelePrompTer company I've used since the first year of
GeekBrief.TV, just released a new version, the ProPrompter HD [2].

LaptopMag.com [3] had an interesting interview with Mary Lou Jepsen.
She gave a bit of insight into what they're working on for the OLPC
v2. Looks like they're integrating haptic technology.

I'm excited about the possibilities of an application called
AnswerOil [4]. It's an interactive tool to help narrow down shopping
choices quickly. They're licensing the technology to online stores, so
we don't get to really use it unless companies adopt it. You can
experience the demo here [5].

DimP is an experimental video player that allows viewers to scrub
through video by dragging moving objects on the screen You can
download a DimP player for Windows here [6].

For a limited time, we have a new Go Daddy promo code. It's GB100
and it'll get you $25 off your order of $100 or more. The offer
expires June 15th. Our other GoDaddy discount codes, GB1, GB2 and GB3,
are always good. For more information, click here [7].

Twitter friend, @Lindsay25 [1] turned us on to The Great American Road
Trip [2] project. It's three guys driving through the lower 48 in 5
days. They charted a route that is only 7500 miles. Their journey
started on Sunday and ends Friday, May 9th. Using mobile broadband,
they've blogged about the trip all week.

Tivoli Audio announced and Internet radio called NetWorks [3]. It
streams audio via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

PicLens [4] is a free broser plug-in that turns browsing photos and
video online into an immersive 3D experience. You can download the
plug in from here [5], and you can learn how to make your Web site
Piclens ready here [6].

The Kuro Plasma Displays by Pioneer have black levels that are five
times deeper than last year's models.

Friday night (May 9th) at 9PM EDT, Neal and I will be on
Ustream.tv/calilewis [7] live from New Jersey talking about the status
of the Big Trip [8]. Come by and join the chat.

<itunes:summary>Despite the fact that I introduced the show as Brief #352, it's
actually #353.

Microsoft's attempt to acquire Yahoo reminds me of something that
would happen in sixth grade, except instead of passing notes, the two
companies keep passing Press Releases. Yahoo didn't respond to
Microsoft's deadline for an answer and Mark Andreessen >analyzed the
situation [1]

Apple upgraded the specs on the iMac [2], but everyone is really
just waiting for the announcement of a 3G iPhone. The expectations are
reaching frenzy status.

Geoff Smith launched a new Web service called RingtoneFeeder.com
[3]. It's a subscription service that automatically installs a new
original ringtone on the iPhone via iTunes every week. Each ringtone
is an original Geoff Smith production. Subscriptions are $1.98 a month
or $19.98 a year. There is a free sample feed available at
Ringtonefeeder.com for anyone who would like to see how it works.

Festo created a giant indoor flying object that floats through the
air like a jelly fish in water. I cant tell what AirJelly's [4]
ultimate purpose could be, but it's beautiful to watch. It uses a
combination of helium and an electric motor powered by lithium-ion
polymer batteries.

<itunes:summary>This the second open source Geek Brief. Thanks to Chris Farley [1],
Brian McNitt [2], David Sinclair [3], Dave Peterson [4], and Rick
Yaeger [5] for playing along at home.

Story #1 provided by Chris was about Apple pushing Safari to iTunes
users [6] on Windows through software updates. Chris doesn't like the
idea. I think Apple is just playing the game by Micrsoft's rules
because Apple heard Windows machines are better for gaming.

Brian McNitt pointed out how Macs do a pretty commendable job with
it's built-in text-to-speech functionality. It can be enhanced with an
application called iSpeak It from ZappTek [7] that converts text to
speech and sends it to iTunes. Cepstral [8] sells voices you can add
to your accessability mix. They have versions that are compatable with
Macs and PCs.

David Sinclair introduced to an application he developed that goes
a step forward by adding multi-voice Narration. He also provided a
discount code for a discount on Dejal Narrator [9]. It's my name CALI.

Dave Peterson gives us a look at the Wheel Surf [10] available from
Hammacher Schlemmer. It's a motorized monocycle that really has to be
seen to be laughed at.

Rick Yaeger dropped the news that the Flight of the Conchords
soundtrack is finally available from iTunes.

The Open Source logo we used is from griskeviciusjurgis.com [11].
