But, with the help of friends and fellow-artists, I'm getting over it and finally getting to a place where I can ask you all to be a part of this... I can ask for your support.)

We had a blast. It was the very, very first gig in that venue... the brand new H.I New York Performance Hall. I looked out a a nearly sold-out audience and saw so many of the same beautiful faces I see on "The Hill" in Central Park during the warm summer months here in New York City. It was great.

Well, we're gonna turn right around and do it again! But, a whole new show, with a guest artist I hand-picked myself who I think you guys are gonna really love. AND, I think this show'll be a precursor to the very first LIVE segment of "What's Behind the Song".

(Whoa! I'm getting waaaaayyy ahead of myself!)

Okay listen, especially if you're new around here. I've been "That Guitar Man from Central Park" for 16 years now.

But in the winter months, we all get a little crazy for a night when we can just hang in a group of really cool people here in town and just kick around some music and laughs. Well, enough is enough. I've been approached by a great guy who has a wonderful venue in which we can put musical events on their feet, like, maybe once a month. (I'll also be talking to you guys very soon about the realization of a little dream of mine.... a LIVE version on the podcast segment, "What's Behind the Song". This first concert will be called... um... uh...

"It's Just Us"

Okay! So... for this very first concert, here's the thing.

The theater is small compare to some of the other venues I play here in New York - seats 200 really comfortably with some standing room. But, a percentage of the seats must be reserved for the young world travelers that are guests in the New York International Hostel. (It's gonna be great and just like Central Park to be playing for visitors from all around the planet.)

So... you'll be able to walk right up and get tickets that night if there are still seats available. OR, starting this Friday, February 1 you'll be able to reserve seats right here at the website. Spread the word to your friends and anyone you think might wanna sit in on the inaugural concert. (We've got such cool thing planned for the whole year!)

I mean, this building was originally a home for Civil War widows, built in 1861. It's a spectacular old building that's been renovated by a guy named Tim of H.I. New York. NEW Show Today. And, I'm meeting with a guy at a new venue to plan some indoor gigs here in New York City very soon.

And, I'm back with TWO brand new podcasts today!

I've said this before. This website and the podcasts are kind of an extension of what I do during the warm weather here in the greatest city on earth. In the summer I get to share my music with people from all across the country and all around the world just by being "That Guitar Man from Central Park".

Yeah, it's 3 things all at once: It's this week's "Weekend Show" where I'm talking about the upcoming concert and past gigs - it's also kind of a holiday episode - and it just happens to be SHOW #350. These podcasts have kind of become an extension of what I do in Central Park all summer.

Seriously, this is one holiday I think everyone should be able to get their minds and their hearts around. This oughta be a special holiday update and podcast, 'cause this is one of my favorite holidays of all. It's a wonderful time to be with friends and family. And, if you can't be with your family... (or you don't even like your family very much) ...it's a great time to invent your own wonderful family. Either way, it's a great time of year.

I'm lucky to have beautiful friends and a family I love very much... both biological and extended. And, among the many, many, many people and things about which I get to fill my heart with gratitude, of course... thanks for allowing me to be "That Guitar Man from Central Park"!

But, first let me welcome everyone who's checkin' out this page from different parts f the country and different parts of the world. I always say, man! For me, this is the greatest city n earth and I love living here all year 'round. But, this weekend marks the beginning of what I call the "When-Harry-Met-Sally-It's-A-Wonderful-Life" time of year. Starting with so many great traditions and events... the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade among them.

Although, I hafta say, I'm really sorry for you if you can't ever get to New York to actually see the parade in person. The television coverage started to really suck over the past few years. The production has actually become more of a big-ass commercial for celebrities, Broadway shows, pop singers and TV pilots than a parade. Years ago, they actually televised high school, college and civil service marching bands as they marched, gave America a chance to see America's children from all over marching and enjoying the spectacle... and incorporated the movement of the parade as it headed downtown. Now, they just emphasize the stationary, horribly lip-synched, over the top production numbers. (Ah, progress.)

BUT... LET'S GET RIGHT TO THE SPECIAL "THANKSGIVING WEEKEND EDITION" of the podcast that has been making America smile... um... 2 people at a time since... um... okay, we really just started last year. But, here it is...

Hey! If you're gonna be in or around New York City in the middle of December, I hope you show up at our annual, traditional, really cool "Year-End Concert". (This year's theater is just a little smaller than Merkin Concert Hall, so you can get tickets right now, right here, today! A little further down the page.) What a great time I had yesterday at The Central Park Boathouse, hangin' out with all the good people of The Tug McGraw Foundation's and the runners who took on the NYC Marathon. It's cool to even be around that much human energy. It's tangible. It's exciting. It's.... it's New York!

Seriously, though.... met a really remarkable bunch of people last night. Some of the runners on Team McGraw are brain cancer survivors. But, every member RAN A DAMNED MARATHON to help another human being. And, I always find that to be irrefutable evidence of what Abraham Lincoln called "the better angels of our nature".

For example, I met these guys last night. Jim McKeon's a reeeealll Bruce Springsteen fan - so I hadda crank out "Thunder Road" on one guitar! Jim's son was the reason he got so behind the people of Team McGraw.

"My inspiration is my eight-year-old son Jimmy, who almost three years ago was diagnosed with a brain tumor. That's what I hate the most about this disease; it attacks children - innocent kids who have never experienced the joys or ordinary struggle or life itself."

And Jeff McMahon is just a really cool guy, a good, good man... (And, the keyboard player for country-star Tim McGraw's band)... who came up with the whole idea of the "Team" for the marathon.

. "It does get challenging sometimes, finding time to train in the midst of a concert tour... but I've seen the pain and the wreckage of this disease firsthand. That makes it easy - knowing that I'm running for Hannah, for Jeannie. This is so much bigger than me."

Y'know what?

Of course it was a real ordeal for me to run the marathon and then play the gig. But, y'know... we do what we can.

I ran one marathon in my life. I ran it really, really well... and I will never run another!!!!!!

26.2 miles ?

No.

The next marathon I enter will be a Dozing Marathon. That's one I'm in training for now. I start out my dozing 2 or 3 hours a day. Then work my way up to about 8 hours or 10 hours a day. My goal is to be able to sleep for the entire 26.2 hours.

It takes dedication. But, I think I can do it.

It'll get me ready for "The YEAR-END CONCERT"!!!

Okay... well, it's Saturday! "The Weekend Show" (podcast) is up on "I Love the Company" today. And, I'm gonna be in Central Park this weekend, but NOT like I usually am.

This is a special weekend.

I'm gonna do a gig for The Tug McGraw Foundation tomorrow at 5:00. (More about that in a minute.)

But, first I hafta put my guitar on my shoulder, stretch, lace up my running shoes and get out there to run the 2008 ING New York City Marathon!!!

The guitar makes it tougher.

Um, no.

I ran one marathon in my life. I ran it really, really well... and I will never run another!!!!!!

26.2 miles

No.

The next marathon I enter will be a Dozing Marathon. That's one I'm in training for now. I start out by dozing 2 or 3 hours a day. Then work my way up to about 8 hours or 10 hours a day. My goal is to be able to sleep for the entire 26.2 hours.

It takes dedication. But, I think I can do it.

But, tomorrow there are some really good, dedicated people who are running the NYC Marathon for The Tug McGraw Foundation. and, they've asked me to be the musical guest at their victory party in The Central Park Boathouse. The purpose is to raise money for the fight against brain cancer, and to help those who are in the fight.... especially the young ones.

So, here are 2 ways to help out.

Now! Next week, one week from today I will be playing in Central Park but NOT at "The Hill". I'm gonna be playing a gig over at The Central Park Boathouse for the Tug McGraw Foundation. They asked me to be the musical guest 'cause it seems I've become a part of Central Park, and I'm just honored for the chance to show up for them.

YOU are also invited to attend that gig. Now, it might seem a little bit expensive. But, it's a party and celebration for a really, really beautiful (and, tax-deductible) cause. These wonderful people are running the marathon to raise money for the fight against brain cancer, and they work an awful lot with kids who are having a rough time of it.

The weekend of November 3rd is NYC Marathon Weekend, so I'll be helping out the Tug McGraw Foundation as the musical guest at their victory party in the Central Park Boathouse instead. By the way... you can all be apart of that fun gig, too. (More about that in a minute.)

I got all caught up in the video projects this week, and making the final contractual arrangements with the theater for the annual "Year-End Concert" comin' up in December... among other things. The Sun sets behind The San Remo a lot faster, there's a little chill in the air in the late afternoon, and a mixed feeling of melancholy and enormous gratitude for another summer with you guys comes over me.

Yeah, it's time to put the shirt on when the Sun disappears. It's time for the crowd to start bringing blankets and sweaters. There's time for a few more afternoons of music and laughs. And, y'never know... we might get a break like we have in the past and be out there for another month of summer-like weather.

We're all set for tomorrow at "The Hill" in Central Park!

Like I said yesterday, if you're one of those people who took it upon themselves to send off an email, or register a complaint when it looked like we were gonna hafta call it the end of the season, or if you sent an angry email to someone... Please do the right thing and follow-up with a thank you to The Parks Department.

It's a very cool thing we get to do every week. It's really great to be such a cool part of that beautiful [park in the middle of the greatest city in the world

Oh man! A new episode of the podcast "I Love the Company" is here today. Tell you all about a gig I went to last night.... of a friend who asked me to be in the audience. Maybe even bring you a little audio from his show. And, I'm playing a track from a guy named Jason Robert Brown that I'd really like you guys to call and leave comments about. But, first....

Whew! Another beautiful day here in New York City.

I know a lot of you are reading this in different parts of the country and different parts of the world. But, I have to apologize to anyone I missed last night at the SGA Songwriters Circle in The Village. Yes, I was invited to sit in with those guys again. (And, I think she advertised that I would be on the stage last night.) But I emailed Ann Ruckert a while back to tell her I couldn't be there.

There is a long-time friend of mine (We probably go back about 15 years) named Scott Burrows, who is an incredibly gifted music man.

Well, Scott is a fine, fine songwriter but hasn't gigged-out a whole lot playing his own original tunes. So, last night he decided to change that and did a solo gig at a club uptown called SMOKE.

He had asked me if I would be in the audience for support and I promised I would be, long before I realized it fell on the same night as the SGA Circle. (But, a promise is a promise and priorities are priorities.)

Scott was great last night. Really great. I brought the MP3 recorder "Eddie" with me. On this new installment of "I Love the Company" I'll give you a little taste of Scott's gig last night.

In the meantime, don't know what to tell you about playing in Central Park this weekend except... unless the people in The Parks Department have a change of heart, there will be no music at "The Hill".

A friend from "The Hill" named Stacy actually emailed me the correct name for the location at which we hang every weekend. I'm NOT on Hernshead!!! I'm at Hernshead Landing.... near Hernshead. So, the Permit Office wouldn't technically be double-booking a location. But, I'm thinkin' that might not matter much to the powers that be at this point. Really kind of a shame. If it makes you feel better and you think it would make a difference, call someone.... email someone... but... BE NICE!

Well... I tried. I really did.

But, NO music in Central Park this weekend.

I don't wanna say too much. I mean, I had a good conversation with Claudia Pepe in the permit office. She's cool. But, I'm out of ideas. Maybe it's someone above her. She said there's nothing she can do. I told her honestly that I think it's really, really silly and kind of a shame. Let's leave it at that. (I do feel bad it might put a damper on the idea that this young couple had for their uniquely-New York wedding in the park.) Ah, beautiful bureaucracy!

That's cool. I mean, it kinda sucks on several levels, but what are you gonna do? I'll let you guys know what's up in the near future.

I also hafta say one mo' time... I love my life. Man! I went down to The Bitter Endlast night with Mr. Sid Bernstein and a couple of friends from "The Hill" to catch a couple of sets by some really gifted artists. I really love people who make music. I love writing music. I love writing songs and playing them for people. I love podcasting and hearing from people like you who love music. I'm passionate about so much that's goin' on all around me. Shit! And, I love being smack in the middle of it.

Another couple of things I'm passionate about are Truth and Reason... and that's why there will be a brand new installment of the more politically-minded and socially-conscious podcast "Where's the Voice" a little later today. (Playin' a bunch of your phone calls and comments.)

But first, welcome to the website. If you're new around here, hit the "Archive" button and catch up a little if you feel like it! This whole website came about because here in New York City I'm known as "That Guitar Man from Central Park" and I have been for the past 16 years. (I'm a very lucky man.)

Now... here's the ridiculous thing!!! This is bizarre! (It might all work out. But, you'll hafta check back.)

It looks like I'm NOT gonna be able to share music and laughs with you guys this Saturday like I usually do. The Permit Office in the Parks Department has this idea that I'm playing on Hernshead, where couples like to hold their wedding ceremonies. (I'm not technically on Hernshead. But, okay... it's close.)

Still, this weekend there is a wedding at 3:00 - so I was denied the Special Events Permit. I guess they still don't get that most of the wedding couples LOVE sharing the day with me and you guys. They don't want me to bother the wedding.

Well... LAST NIGHT, THROUGH THIS WEBSITE, I GOT A PHONE CALL FROM THE COUPLE THAT'S GETTING MARRIED THIS WEEKEND! They said they picked that spot in Central Park because I'm there singing. They figured they could ask me to play a couple of songs for them and then share their special day with all of you... first dance and all.

So... they called Claudia Pepe who runs the permit office and asked if I could be issued the permit to play from 3:00 to 6:00.

The answer is still NO!

Go figure.

Ha!

Keep checking back for the latest. Maybe Claudia will come through and be the heroine in all this. But, right now... the word is NO MUSIC this Saturday.

Hi... welcome to the website. Hey... I'm a music man! So this is a very, VERY, VERY unusual update right here right now.

You guys who come around here all the time know, I'm not one for fakin' it.

I mean, you know how much I love doing what I do out in Central Park, how much I love music, how much I love the adventure of my life...

... how much I love the company.

But, I'm not one to fake it.

.

I had to take a little break from the norm on today's podcast. And I'll be back tomorrow with a full update and we'll get back to the fun... y'know, the music, the absurdity of that bunch of bird-watchers from last weekend, your phone calls, the kick of writing new songs. The joy of living in this amazing town.

New artists to discover, new laughs.

But... right now I'll ask you to listen to today's episode of "I Love the Company" if you're at all interested in the reason why I'm not all full of sunshine today. I've learned that holding onto a resentment like this is very much like taking poison myself, and then waiting for someone else to get sick. So, I want to get this out... and then we'll move on.

I know I promised to separate the news, the politics, the world events, and the social consciousness from this site and the original podcast, placing it all in the new podcast called "Where's the Voice".

But, while George W. Bush was embarrassing himself and all of us yet again in Australia yesterday... quoted in the Australian press as saying, "We're kicking ass in Iraq"... (At the same time we were losing another 28 soldiers in six days.) ... and swaggering like a fucking frat boy, I spent the last 2 days watching CSPAN and the testimony of General David Petraeus and that cookie-pusher, Ryan Crocker.

All I can say is this.

I'm furious. I'm disgusted. I'm saddened.

If you voted for George W. Bush... you should be ashamed of yourself.

No excuses. If you're a person with any character at all...

...you should feel fucking awful.

3,774 American lives lost in Iraq so far.

Not Afghanistan... IRAQ!

Over 1,000 more Americans than Osama Bin Laden killed in the World Trade Center.

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians dead. Millions homeless.

If you don't see this war in Iraq for the tragedy it is... if you can still support these morally bankrupt, conscience-less criminals in Washington DC (Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Tenet and the rest)....

... then, the way I feel right now? I don't wanna know you.

I certainly DON'T love your company.

On the flip-side, if you're a good, decent person and you voted for this unAmerican troop of oligarchs for misguided reasons, or a skewed sense of loyalty or priority, and have come to realize who they are and what's been going on, if you've been able to grow through this experience and realize how horribly and tragically mistaken you've been... there are no words how much respect I have for you.

But, everyone...

Just like every warm weekend for the past 16 years, this past Saturday was another typically amazing day in so many ways. If you came out for the music and the good feelings.... THANKS AGAIN!

It was also the most ridiculous afternoon I've spent out there in a long time.... because I ran into some of the silliest, and in a bizarre way, some of the sweetest people you can imagine. (But, some of them were downright rude and nasty. Pushy and inconsiderate.) We're gonna have some fun with this bunch on ILTC!

Who? What bunch?

Would you believe it.... BIRD WATCHERS!!! (Or... birdders, as I heard one guy describe the group.)

Gotta say, a few of them were actually decent people trying to do the right thing. And if they're reading this... they know who they are.

.

But, about half of these bird-watchers were so self-centered and rude that it defies description. (It's a damned good thing I can laugh about stuff like this.) And, the hundreds of people who showed up for the music this weekend were sooooo understanding and patient with this bunch of nature-loving but socially-awkward, inconsiderate, silly individuals.

I'm gonna be talking about it on today's episode of "I Love the Company" and I'll be posting some video and photos from this weekend all week.

I've been playing a lot of male, independent singer/songwriters on the podcast, "I Love the Company". Today, I'm gonna do "Ladies Day - part I". Okay... NOW! For those of you over in Europe... you might wanna skip down a little bit. But, for you guys on this side of the ocean, y'know?

This has got to be the streakiest New York Yankees team I have ever seen in my life. Y'just never know who's gonna show up on any given day. The line-up either looks devastating and scary.... or, everybody's sleeping at the same time.

But, I was up at The Stadium yesterday... and I have a feeling that after a 3-game sweep here at home, the Red Sox have gotta be wondering if this is gonna be another one of those years.

(5 games is still a lot to make up in a month. And, Boston is a good team that looked really good against Chicago this week. But... we'll see.)

Got a good one today on "I Love the Company". Playin' a couple of your phone calls and a couple of tracks that some of you might already be familiar with. If you're new here... WELCOME!

Here in New York City... man! We had another great day out in Central Park this past weekend.

BAD NEWS, though.

We've got several friend/fans who have traveled several times, one from as far away as Pennsylvania, just to spend an afternoon in the park with all of us. I just heard that Pennsylvania-guy's planning to come and hang out again this weekend.... BUT!!! Once again The Permit Office of the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation isn't giving us the Special Events Permit for this coming weekend.

I know, I know.

It kinda sucks.

And, I know they have their own feeling about it. But, I've been doing this for 16 years... and for 16 years, every time there is a 30-minute wedding ceremony in The Ladies Pavilion out on Hernshead, I've been extremely courteous and thoughtful and stopped playing. Very, very often the newlyweds will come over afterwards and share their first dance with "The People on the Hill". But... there is a new woman running the Permit Office this year and she feels it's a problem.

(It's her job and she's entitled to run things the way she sees fit.)

Ah-ha!!! Maybe it's not her fault! Maybe it was that one cranky minister from last summer. Remember her? She was nasty! (But, we still stopped playing and singing and everyone was completely polite to her.) But, maybe that awful woman has been complaining or something.

Oh well. Last I'm gonna say about it.
