STC Interview: Nathan Robinson of "Raise Up Roof Beams"

Nathan Robinson, singer-songwriter and guitarist from the U.S. east coast indie band Raise Up Roof Beams, articulates a a new ethic which prefers live performance interaction over studio isolation, community building over elitism,and relational politics over slogans and diatribes.
The band, which takes its name from a J.D. Salinger novella ("Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters"), blends folk styles, punk sensibility, and literary lyrical allusions with the diverse strengths of the players' musical prowess.

The line up is: Robinson: guitar/vocals/harmonica, Harrison Gordner: drums/percussion/marimba, Justin Arawjo: mandolin/banjo/lap steel/accordion/melodica/backup guitar, Alan Carroll: keyboards, Kelly Musser: upright bass/vocals. Live: They play venues around the northeast corridor from Washington , D.C. to Philadelphia, have also toured the Midwest and plan an extended Summer 2008 tour to support their upcoming release.

OK---that's the plug---you decide! Personally, I love Ronnie's dirty slide guitar and rough vocals and when I think of him I think of the Faces and especially the late Ronnie Lane, bassist for the Small Faces/Faces and a musical side-kick of Pete Townshend.

Adam Curry's interview with Presidential candidate Ron Paul (Daily Source Code #677) stands as one of the best (brief) presentations of Pauls's views I have heard to date. Sharp questions from Adam, thoughtful, well-reasoned and consistent answers from Paul. Started in February 2006, Myles & Phil later found Adam to complete the 3 piece and became known as theVision theGuilt. The year kicks off with The Shakes delving into the murky world of materialism, greed and wanting it all with the release of their new single ‘I Want A Better Life’.

This new single follows on from the success of last single ‘Liberty Jones’ which reached #4 in the 2006 PMC Yearly Chart, in spite of only being available for the second half of the year! The single also picked up plays on commercial radio - XFM, Radio 2 and 6Music - as well as a few US stations including Indie 103.1 in LA and over 50 regional stations in the UK. The Shakes went into the studio with up-coming producer James Lewis (The On-Offs, Morning Runner, Dead 60’s, Artic Monkeys) at the end of last year and have moved on from the catchy pop-charm of ‘Liberty Jones’ displaying a rawer and rougher side to their sound.

Christmas permeates the atmosphere today: people dashing to and fro' like lemmings dashing toward an abyss of COMMERCE---buying and selling. I tried to ignore it---the madness of an economic system which dehumanizes and debases. I tried to shut it out, but absent an absolute seclusion it comes at us in a dizzying whirl of messages that all translate into: BUY! BUY! BUY!

"Out of the blue, into the black", Neil Young once sang. Out of the RED into the black, as the ledgers of retail ring off their balance sheets. And the masses scurry, the crescendo builds...

I may be accused of cynicism, but the system that promotes greed, avarice, and consumerism as a spiritual force that binds people into more materialism IS cynical.

The world is at war under the banners of religion. The same people who scream that the CHRIST has been taken out of Christmas beat the drums to march into Armageddon---to bomb, burn, and destroy---all the while masquerading as proponent of PEACE.

"Peace on earth goodwill toward men"---and bomb the hell out of them to give them democracy. All funded by the commerce system that feeds off the basest of human impulses and the western mindset of material gratification.

To all who sent season's greetings, I know you mean well. But let's take all the well intentioned hopes, founded in basic decency and distribute them into our world every day. Charity, faith, hope, love...and the abiding prayer for a day when we no longer kill one another...take those tenets and divorce them from this grubby commercialism of mind-controlled mass consumerism.

STOP empowering the masters of war through your dollars. STOP enslaving the peoples of marginalized nations and tribes through the war machine of America. STOP allowing retailers and marketers to shape your opinions, actions, and motivations---and PLEASE STOP, and meditate on the Christ, you claim to celebrate, the One scripture says came "To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." (Luke 1:79)

This show comes not to honor Christmas, but to rip the mask off the commercial fraud it evolved into through the systems of religion and the captains of greed and war.
